〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Nagachika Hideyoshi
CHARACTER AGE: 18
SERIES: Tokyo Ghoul
CHRONOLOGY: Manga - A few months after his appearance in Chapter 53 - ‘Lecture’
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Whatever’s vacant! Extremely easy to get along with, he’d be chill with roomates.

BACKGROUND: Wiki Page

Nagachika Hideyoshi is the best friend of the protagonist of the series Tokyo Ghoul. His role is one of support, being the ‘token human character’ of the series, someone for the main character to root him to the world of humans which he has lost due to tragic events in his life. Nagachika lives in a world plagued by demi-human creatures called ‘Ghouls’, a subspecies that hunt and feed on humans in order to live. Living in the 20th ward of Tokyo--a relatively safe place with few ghoul ‘attacks’, Kaneki and Nagachika live a relatively calm University Student life; but all that changes when his best friend becomes the subject of experiment for a depraved doctor, turning him into a half-ghoul.

While in the series his best friend, now ‘half monster’, does his best to hide his new nature away from his friend--in order to protect him from being killed and eaten--it’s very clearly shown that not only is Nagachika fully aware of his best friend’s plight, but he even drops subtle hints that the other isn’t ‘eating well’, and he should ‘do something about it’. His feelings towards his best friend doesn’t change despite how things have, and he still acts the supporting role of best friend and anchor to the human world to the other.

...Up until Kaneki disappears, to which Nagachika starts on a chain of events to join the Commission of Counter Ghoul for the sole purpose of locating, contacting, and protecting the most important person in his life. (The canon point I am taking Nagachika from, however, is only in the beginning stages of this, so he’s not a fully fledged member of the CCG as of yet.)

PERSONALITY:

The very first thing one would note about Nagachika Hideyoshi is his unending optimism. He’s always the type to yell, cheer, and cry out his feelings; be they positive or dramatically negative, he’s the type of person who seems to come across as, quite literally, living sunshine. He’s the type of person who can befriend and get along with just about anyone he comes across, his attitude being carefree, easygoing and easily adjustable to peoples’ moods. The fact that his best friend is Kaneki Ken--a shut-in who has no other friends except the optimistic Hideyoshi, is proof enough that he has a personality that can break through even the tallest of walls and wrangle people into enjoying his company. At the same time, this sort of personality can be overbearing and kind of uncomfortable to those who aren’t so easily swayed by such an attitude, and he can tend to chase off--by accident--those who he’s talking to just by being too forward with his treatment of others.

It’s also worthy of note to how over accommodating he is as a person; that even when he’s brushed off, put aside, or lied to; he doesn’t seem to give a damn; deciding there’s possibly significant reasoning behind it. People not returning his calls, messages, or even giving him the thumbs up that they’re doing fine doesn’t trigger a reaction of anger or annoyance in him, but rather, just a constant feeling of worry and wonder to whether or not that person is okay. It’s shown most prominently when his best friend won’t get back in contact with him after he gets out of the hospital, keeping patience with him despite how it took literal weeks to get a word out of him after his intensive surgery. So long as his friends are safe and happy, he doesn’t give a damn about his own feelings or needs.

Hideyoshi can be extremely momlike; someone who takes care of those who seem to be in need for it. His role in the CCG is that of a sort of deliveryman, doing tasks as a sort of gofer, though his reasons for this are completely selfish, he seems to be entirely comfortable doing it anyhow. The same goes for his treatment of Kaneki, as most often he’s constant in calling him to make sure he’s eating or sleeping properly, even going so far as to leave him food as well as cooking instructions so that his friend is taking proper care of himself. Perhaps it’s because he knows someone without any parents needs this sort of care at some point in their life, being all too willing to fill those shoes if he’s the only one who can do it.

His interests and goals have been shown to be extremely spontaneous; and he’s easily influenced into doing, learning, and gaining new skills. Nagachika is someone capable of making decisions at the drop of a hat, such as to learn English just because he one day that he wanted to understand music that he often listens to, or to learn Kung-Fu because it looks cool on television.

Despite this carefree attitude and overly friendly personality of his, he’s rather adept at hiding another part of himself; the fact that he’s actually extremely attentive and sharp-minded. He’s capable of picking up on subtleties, finding out secrets and tying together information to figure things out in a nearly ‘Sherlock-like’ manner. He’s also extremely good at hiding this fact about himself behind his living sunshine demeanour, making it hard for people to see exactly how intelligent and quick-witted he actually is. He’s seen as extremely dangerous to have around ghouls, as he’s far too quick to figure things out, and the way he is, discovering what his best friend is would mean death for him. It’s hinted, however, that he’s already entirely aware of this fact since early on, proving exactly how sharp he is, but given that he’s also extremely in-tune with others’ feelings and situations, he keeps it a secret alongside everything else as to let life run as ‘normal’.

Hideyoshi is a determined man, and he doesn’t often let things get so far that he’ll give up on them. Be them small goals, or his relationships with others, he’s not someone who will let circumstances affect how he feels about things. Just because he’s ignored, doesn't mean he’ll stop caring about a person, and if he’s completely aware of being lied to, he doesn’t often take it personally. His relationships with others is far more important for something quite so petty, so he doesn't often pay any mind to it. Though, he isn’t someone who will just sit around and wait for things to happen, either, as when his best friend goes missing, he sets a goal of finding out what happened to him, even going so far as pushing his way into the ranks of the CCG, a group of people dedicating to destroying people like his best friend--just so he can possibly find and protect the man he’s lost. At the end of it all; he even accepts the ‘monster’ his friend had become, showing exactly how compassionate and caring a person Hideyoshi can actually be.

POWER:

Enhanced Speed : Capable of moving at a much higher speed than humans, or even faster than most animals, as well. Both in bursts and in an all-out sprint, the speed at which Hide can now move can keep up with high-motion vehicles such as trains or racecars. The downsides of this being that he can’t keep it up more than a handful of minutes without experiencing extreme exhaustion, and of course, friction at such a high pace capable of catching his clothes on fire--or even melting the soles of his shoes.

Regenerative Healing Factor: External wounds, including fractured bones and deeper burns heal at a much more accelerated rate, disregarding severity. Limbs and fingers, eyes, cartilage, muscle, bone, etc. Can regenerate back within a couple of days, depending on the severity of the lost body tissue. Blood loss is no longer severe as the body can regenerate it at a much faster pace than any regular human. This power is to compliment the previous one, as the extreme physical strain put on Hide’s body can be counter-acted by his regenerative factor.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[He could tell. He could always tell that about his friend, how little he slept or how poorly he'd been eating lately. In the way Kaneki always tried to hide secrets from the Hideyoshi, they were always so obvious to him; even if he always acted the fool. He'd let it slide. If only because he knew Kaneki was better off that way, dealing with his troubles on his own. Right? He was doing the other favour by letting him do things in his own ways...

Right?

As his phone flashes red at the sound of a reply, he wonders, really. If Kaneki really was better like that, on his own, dealing with everything after… that incident.
Fingers slide over the screen, and he takes a moment to read it. A little smirk moves up his face--Well; if his friend was already awake, there was no need to hold back. He takes the moment to dial the number on the phone’s touch screen, and he doesn't have to wait more than a moment before Kaneki answers--though his answer is just overwhelming silence. So much for getting a coherent reply out of him. Well; it wasn’t like it mattered.]

Ohhhh, snap. I actually woke you up. Now I actually feel bad! [He laughs, a bright grin spreading across his face as he lays back, an arm around the back of his head.

He pauses, Kaneki still not raising his voice to answer. ...Well. In for a penny... out for a pound. If he had absolutely any doubts about talking to his friend about this, then he wouldn’t have begun this conversation in the first place.]

Silent treatment, huh. Well, whatever. Just callin' to see if you've been alright lately. You've seemed distracted today, Aaa? If you need any help with anything, you know I’m here buddy. Just a phone call away, right?

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

Comic books have always been something he's enjoyed. Unlike a certain best friend of his, reading wasn't his strongest suit, but comic books; superheroes, and far off places were always something that could get the messy-haired student chattering. It was cool; it was so cool. Who wouldn’t sell their soul to be able to have this chance? Who wouldn’t give up their entire life to become something that was only stuff of fantasy and dreams?

America was always a place of wonder for him, as well. Having announced his passion for wanting to learn English because of an American song, he thought that somehow, if he'd ever found himself on American soil it'd be one of the best days of his life. But as he slowly walks away from the military base, a place where he was just told an unbelievable story, given a new life, a new start… His head swims with every possibility that this could just be some sort of joke. He’s being played a trick on, this isn’t real in any way. Any time now he was going to wake up, and...

There’s a file in his hands. One that outlined pretty well his whole life, things no-one should really know about him as well as a section that claimed that he had super powers, he almost feels sick. Sick to his stomach, something nauseous rising up in his guts, and it’s almost burning.

He definitely feels dizzy. A dream. A dream, it’s just a dream. But a good twenty dozen pinches and a few digs of his teeth into the inside of his cheek... believing this wasn't real just wasn't reasonable. As time passes, it’s becoming less and less reasonable with every second that clicked by. Flicking his fingers through the pages of that file, Hideyoshi takes the next moment to lean back against the wall just outside the exit. ...Well; that'll help with keeping him from falling over or something totally unreasonable.

...He could do this, right? It could be worse. Way worse. He’s always wanted to do something useful with his life. Why not this? This could just be another page of his life; something… good.

“...Come on now, don't lose it over something like this. You could have been pinched up and dropped in the middle of a world without technology or something. ...Like that's even possible.”

You're talking to yourself, kiddo. Someone’s bound to notice, and in a place like this, they won’t even think you’re crazy.

FINAL NOTES: I plan on canon-updating him to his 19-year old version eventually, and when he comes back I’m just wondering if I can add a third power to his resume, given I only gave him two at app-in?
